On Monday, Graça Machel addressed the United Nations General Assembly at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit to present 100 ideas for a freer, fairer world that the Sparks of Hope represent. Her remarks were incredibly inspiring and focused on the vital work that Sparks of Hope around the world are fighting for every day to achieve peace, justice, equality and health for all.

Mourning the Loss of Kofi Annan
Kofi Annan’s commitment to peace, justice and human rights was a life-long one. His dedication to building a world that Madiba would be proud of underpins the #WalkTogether campaign. Kofi Annan was a true champion of the movement and in celebrating Madiba’s 100th anniversary in Johannesburg last month, he walked together with his fellow Elders, activists, civil society and Sparks of Hope and said, “Every athlete knows that the key to success is not just individual effort but teamwork, support and dedication. This is why we walked together today. Collectively, we are the sum of our parts; we are a movement, and when we speak with one voice, our call for justice cannot be ignored.”

On 18 July, The Elders Graça Machel, Kofi Annan, Lakhdar Brahimi and Mary Robinson ended their symbolic #WalkTogether on Mandela Day at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. There they shared the stage with Sparks of Hope organisations to discuss how peace, health, justice & equality can be strengthened to leave no one behind.
